Yes it is required. If you refer to the Home page of the application, you will see how the social security number is handled once you enter it into the application. In order for us to match your supporting documents (transcripts, GRE score reports, etc.) with your application, we use your SSN.

Yes, you are still eligible to apply as a first year grad student. Please refer to the application for specifics on the tenable school choice.
You can still apply, but the system requires you list a tenable school choice. If your first choice of graduate school is not presently a Hertz tenable school, there is a point on the application where you can enter this school's name. You will be expected to concisely defend this unconstrained choice later in the application, indicating what this school offers that is not offered by any of the tenable schools.

You must choose a tenable school first on the application. In the next section of the application, you will have the opportunity to list your "unconstrained school choice." You will be expected to concisely defend this unconstrained choice later in the application, indicating what this school offers that is not offered by any of the tenable schools. At this point, documents are not required

Your Master's work is a part of the Fellowship as long as it is an integral part of a program to obtain a PhD.

We expect that each of your Referees will use our format to submit their information, answering our specific questions. We can accept the existing letters that you mention as supplemental information only. Please register your four references using the system we have provided.

Yes, please fill out all the information requested. Your recommender may still request a PDF version that they can print to be mailed back to us.
Only 4 recommenders can be submitted electronically. If you have additional recommenders that would like to submit a paper application, please contact us at the Foundation and we can send a PDF form to the recommender.
We will continue to accept recommendations after the deadline, but they may not be considered in our decisions of which applicants to interview. Those decisions are made in the first two weeks in November.
Interviewees will be selected by mid-November. You should hear from the Foundation regarding your status before the end of the year.
Yes, it is certainly possible. If you are awarded both the Fulbright and the Hertz, the Hertz Foundation will work with you on deferring support.
Yes, you should apply now and if you are awarded a Hertz Fellowship, defer for two years.
We will continue to accept GREs after the deadline. Initial interview decisions will be made in mid-November. Every Fellowship applicant is required to take at least the aptitude portion of the Graduate Record Examination and to have the results sent to the Foundation. Our Foundation ID is #4366. We accept subject test scores, but do not require them.

You appear to be beyond your first year of graduate school unless your MS degree was awarded at the same time as your BS, BA, or equivalent. Note that Hertz Fellowships are rarely granted to students beyond their first year of graduate school, and then only in cases of "exceptional leverage" (Leverage meaning what difference the award of the Hertz Fellowship is likely to make in the kind, quality, and/or personal creativity of the student's graduate research.) The transcript page in the application which asks for the degree(s) you earned at the schools you list is the place to enter your Masters degree information.
The application for the next academic year will be available by late August. Feel free to look over the older application, but it would be better to wait and fill in the information on the new application.
First year graduate students are eligible to apply by the deadline date shown on our web site.
Eligible applicants for Hertz Fellowships must be students of the applied physical sciences or engineering who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America.
We no longer consider applications from students who are already beyond their first year of graduate study except in cases of "exceptional leverage." You can apply, but you MUST select one of the tenable schools from our list of tenable schools as your first choice. (Leverage meaning what difference the award of the Hertz Fellowship is likely to make in the kind, quality, and/or personal creativity of the student's graduate research.)
